The International Festival of the Sahara is held every year at the end of December in the city of Douz, in Hanish Square.
The aim of this event is to popularize the Bedouin traditions and habits in all their aspects through folkloric dance, popular music performances and horse and camel races. During this festival, visitors also get the chance to witness a Bedouin wedding ceremony and to savour the region’s typical dishes.
The Festival of Douz was founded in 1910. Events involving popular games were presented to its visitors who were, at the time, mainly colonists. But it is only in 1981 that the festival took on an international dimension.
The 46th edition of the International Festival of Douz took place from the 26th to the 29th of December 2013. It was marked by the participation of several active cultural associations and sports federations.
